Naming
Inspirations!
Looking for inspiration for naming and describing your handmade items?
Unique names can benefit your craft business; these resources can help
you find them!

? Lustrous Lillies, by BeadinBabe |
Thesaurus.com
When
you're trying to write a good description, sometimes you can get
stumped. If the word "bright" comes to mind with your
item, you can type that in Thesaurus.com
and it will suggest similar words, like radiant, lustrous, and scintillating.
Thesaurus.com
is great because it can help come up with synonyms that you'd never
think of, and it can come up with a huge list of names that can
help you name your item. |

Espresso, Spice, & Mustard -
by EcoChicHandKnits |
Named
after food, smells, spices
These
words can be powerful in describing an item. "Cocoa dust"
sounds so much nicer than "brown". Linking items to tastes
and smells will help customers remember your item and help them
feel connected with it. I sell journals made from leather, and I'll
sometimes say a journal smells of musky leather, and feels strong
yet supple. Anything tht can help bring your item to "life"
can help a customer fall in love with it.
Consider using names of spices (cinnamon, saffron, nutmeg, ginger)
and foods (cream, oatmeal, raspberry, tangerine) in your item names
or descriptions.

People
Names
There's
no reason an item can't have a person's name! Consider looking at
baby names and meanings. You can pick a name that relates to you
item and explain why you chose it.

Color
Names
Can't
figure out quite what hue of blue it is? Want to be more descriptive
than just "light green"? This list of colors on Wikipedia
can be a great way to find names for the various shades in your
item: List

Catwoman
earrings - by JessicaC |
Names
from famous stories & literature
Romeo
and Juliet. Alice in Wonderland. Edgar Allen Poe. The Secret Garden.
Bella and Edward.
These figures all evoke different emotions from us-- from horror
(Poe) to intense romance (twilight). Linking your item to thoughts
and emotions will help bring it to life in a buyer's mind. |

Jormugandr - by AwakenJournaling |
Mythological
names - Gods, Godesses, and Dragons
Using
names out of myths and legends is fun (I love to research that stuff)
and it can also give you a bit more to write about. Explain who the
figure you're naming the item after is, or explain why you think your
item might have been used by a mighty God of past legends.

Mesonoxian,
by AwakenJournaling |
Obsolete
& Unusual Words
I just
love learning rare and obsolete words. I never knew what "mesonoxian"
meant (relating to midnight) until I searched for a name for a black
and navy journal I had for sale.

Emotions
& Feelings
For some items, using emotions and feelings in the name can be quite
effective. Words like "romance", "desire", "longing",
"sorrow", and "euphoria" can give life to your
items.
